Granny’s Shaved Ice, formerly located at 312 N East St, posted to their social media accounts that the week of April 13 would be their final week before temporarily closing down and moving with plans to reopen by mid-May. 312 N East St was home to not just Granny’s Shaved Ice and Lorine’s Soda Shop, but also Me Latte’s Bakery, Hunny Belle Boutique, and Magnetic Whimsies.
“Just because a chapter ends doesn’t mean the story is over,” Granny’s posted to their Instagram story on April 13. The lease terms at 312 N East St were up and Granny’s decided to start looking for a new spot, as renewing the lease was not an option. Hunny Belle Boutique, previously having a room inside Granny’s Shaved Ice, and Granny’s sister store, Lorine’s Soda Shop, will be joining Granny’s at their new location. As for the rest of the businesses there is no confirmation, however owner of Granny’s Shaved Ice Skyler Stewart is open to inviting Me Latte’s and Magnetic Whimsies to join at the new location.
Granny’s has yet to announce the new location, but will get the keys this week. “We will be announcing [our new location] when keys are in hand,” Stewart said. Stewart hinted to The Bells that the new location will be within walking distance of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.
“I was very sad, just because of what we have built over the past two years,” Stewart said in regard to her initial reaction to moving. Stewart is big at creating memories and growing community, which was a big part of Granny’s. After moving forward, she is glad she made memories at the old location and is looking forward to growing and thriving at the new location. “We feel joy that the Lord has placed us in a new home where we can make more memories,” Stewart said.
“Being a part of [Student Event Planners Association], I got to see a lot of behind-the-scenes that went into making Granny’s what it is today,” senior mass communications major Victoria Borders said. Borders interned for Granny’s Shaved Ice while at UMHB and has seen it grow from a trailer to a house. “While it is sad to leave the first brick and mortar behind, I genuinely believe the move will be so good for their business,” Borders continued.
Granny’s Shaved Ice is excited to start a new journey in a new home. “So many people told me Granny’s felt like their safe space and that is more than anything I could ever ask for,” Stewart said. Stewart is excited to start a new chapter near UMHB and grow with the community. For more information on Granny’s Shaved Ice, visit their Instagram account @grannys_shaved_ice.
