The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women’s basketball team enters the upcoming season with new coaching staff and an opportunity to establish a new identity. As returning players adjust to different coaching styles and build relationships with their new coaches, the transition could lead to the team’s success.

For returning players Sofia George, Abby Levings and Madyson Solis, the arrival of a new coaching staff has brought excitement and a renewed focus on team chemistry.

“I like how the coaches have very high expectations for us,” George said. “I think it motivates us to work harder so we can uphold those standards.”

Levings highlighted the coach’s sharp vision and commitment to player development, saying they emphasize individual improvement while helping the team grow together. Their attention to detail and communication has also stood out to Levings, who said the coaches hold players accountable while explaining the purpose behind drills and defensive responsibilities.

Solis shared a similar perspective, emphasizing the relationships she has developed with the coaching staff. “I love that our coaches genuinely have the best interests of all of us at heart,” Solis said. “Every time I talk to any of them, I feel cared for.”

As the team adjusts to new leadership, chemistry remains an important part of the transition. George described the team’s dynamic as improving every day, while Levings said the group as connected through communication, competitive energy and a shared goal. Solis said the past several weeks have helped bring the team closer together.

The combination of returning players and new energy has also created optimism surrounding the team’s potential. George said we have some good pieces on the team this year. “It’s just a matter of seeing how we mesh and where Coach puts us.” Having multiple players capable of contributing could provide additional opportunities throughout the season.

Levings believes consistency, defensive discipline and selfless basketball will be essential as the team works toward its goals. For Solis, success will depend on the team’s willingness to embrace the work required to compete for a championship. “Everyone has to be willing to put the team first and do the little things,” Solis said.

Beyond adjusting to a new coaching staff, the upcoming season also represents an opportunity for players to return to competition and see their offseason efforts come together. Players are eager to get on the court and compete together.

George, Levings and Solis described the team as energetic, connected and hungry. Each word reflects the excitement surrounding the program entering a new chapter. With a new coaching staff establishing its expectations and returning players embracing the transition, the Cru will look to turn its offseason progress into success on the court.

“We’re a new team that’s ready to fight, compete and represent the Cru every time we step on the court.” George said. UMHB women’s basketball opens its season Nov. 7 at Trinity University in San Antonio. It’s first home game is 6 p.m. Nov. 10 vs. Dallas Christian College.

“We’re a new team that’s ready to fight, compete and represent the Cru every time we step on the court.” George echoed that message with a simple request to fan
