WALL-E, Dragon and Poetry? English Club Hosts Annual Poe Party
By Marley Anthony, Assistant Editor
To honor the life and death of famous American writer and poet, Edgar Allan Poe, the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor’s English Club hosted their annual Poe Party on Oct. 27 in Lord Conference Center in Parker Academic Center. The party hosted a costume contest, faux Poe writing competition and games with Poe themed prizes.
“I just like how creepy [Poe’s] stories are, and his life was so sad, so I like that we get to celebrate him during this,” English Club President Alexis Pendergrass said.
The English Club hosts Poe Party in October because Poe’s gothic writing style pairs well with the Halloween season and to honor his death in October.
“The goal of the English Club is to facilitate a love of literacy and language,” English Club Sponsor Jacky Dumas said. The faux Poe writing competition is an opportunity for students to have fun showing off their creativity in Poe’s traditional style. Avery Kuhn won the contest this year for her poem about a cat interrupting her late night studying.
The other big event of the night was the costume contest. The runner up was Austin Kelley, who dressed up as WALL-E, and the winner was freshman Kara Schmidt, who was dressed as the Light Dragon from the Legend of Zelda, Tears of the Kingdom.
“I am super, super happy to win…I’ve been working on these antlers for the last I don’t know how many weeks,” Schmidt said.
Every Tuesday, the English Club hosts their weekly “studiscivity,” which is a meeting that includes a mix of study time, discussions and activity centered around the theme of the meeting.
