As the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Acrobatics & Tumbling team prepares for its first meet Monday, the focus isn’t just on rankings or titles; it’s confidence, preparation and joy.

Acrobatics & Tumbling blends together many elements of gymnastics, cheerleading and acrobatic gymnastics into one fast-paced collegiate competition.

“We combine disciplines of gymnastics, cheerleading and acrobatic gymnastics together to create a fast-paced competitive meet,” Head coach Raffaela Scotto.  “All of those skills that athletes have learned growing up can be used at the college level.”

Unlike many programs they compete against, UMHB competes in Division III without athletic scholarships. Coaches say that difference makes their success even more meaningful.

“It’s the athletes,” Head coach Raffaela Scotto. “They’re deciding every single day to show up for each other and compete for something greater.”

The program has won three Division III championships throughout the recent years, making a name for themselves as a national contender. Coaches credit the team’s culture shift and competitive environment for successful outcomes.

“Our theme this year is joy,” Assistant coach Katelyn Kolodziejczyk, finding joy in what you do and what others do helps keep the competitive environment strong.” UMHB’s preseason training has been centered on technique and strength development. Both Coaches emphasized focusing on fundamentals and building power in the weight room to prepare athletes for the demands of competition.

“Once they have the basics down. Our athletes know what to do, “Scotto said, “Building that strength in the fall really pays off in the spring.”

As Monday’s season opener against East Texas Baptist approaches, the message to the team remains simple. Trust the work.

“Be confident in what we’ve practiced and have fun,” Kolodziejczyk said, “It’s easy to get caught up in winning, but when they just go out there and compete freely, it takes the pressure off.”

Rather than focusing on preseason rankings, the team is focusing on internal growth.

“Our saying is ‘us versus us,’” Scotto said.

With championships in its history and a renewed focus on joy and preparation, UMHB Acrobatics & Tumbling enters the season ready to build on its legacy and continue growing together as a team.
