The use of AI is expanding on college campuses due to its ease of access and ability to find information, making it a convenient option for students.
Paige McClain, a nursing major, said, “I use it quite often actually. I use it to condense PowerPoints and to give me test questions to study”.
Students are relying on AI because it can quickly help with homework. This has caused mixed reactions with some believing that AI can help students study and gather information while others believe that it does more harm than good.
To set guidelines, UMHB is testing a new policy that would help clear up the usage of AI in the classroom. The policy includes light system is given tells students when it is appropriate to use AI. A red-light class means using AI is prohibited in the classroom. A yellow light means that AI can be used in that class with restrictions. A green-light assignment means that AI is entirely permitted in the classroom to enhance student engagement. Us
Christi Carlson, a professor with the Mayborn College of Health Sciences, pointed out that the use of AI helps nursing students. “We definitely welcome some of the things that can help us be more efficient at safe catches or practice.”
However Carlson has concerns about how AI effects students’ intellectual development and using it every day
“My fear as a teacher with it is that it can kind of disrupt cognitive learning. The whole point of learning is to learn content and to also learn how to apply it,” Carlson said.
Dr. James King, a professor with the McLane College of Business, thinks that AI use is needed as it helps both students and professors.
“I believe we have to do whatever allows us to be the best professors in the classroom as possible, and right now that is learning how to utilize AI to benefit us in the classroom as instructors”
As AI continues to be used the University will need to continue testing new policies to set guidelines to help both students and faculty.
