The Journey of Rebranding SEPA

The Student Event Planners Association, more commonly referred to as SEPA, focuses on building community through events while gaining insight into business ownership and event planning.

Lindsey Goertz, co-vice president and co-treasurer of SEPA, noticed last year that guys were very hesitant or dismissive about joining the organization because they thought it was a girl’s club. At the time, she was a social coordinator. When she was offered the position of vice president over the summer, she felt that she was in a better place and role to address this.

At the beginning of the semester, Goertz, along with President Jill Christian and advisor Dr. Avery Gree,n got together to discuss the future of SEPA. Goertz brought up her concern during this meeting, and both Christian and Dr. Green supported the idea to rebrand SEPA to appear more co-ed. Goertz and Christian were also the only two remaining SEPA officers, so they were rapidly recruiting officers while working on this rebrand.

“I would say we were working more on SEPA’s rebrand than we were on homework assignments the first week of school.” Goertz, senior public relations major, said.

The rebrand consisted of a change in their color scheme, a new logo, a new t-shirt design, and an ambassador program. Goertz designed the new logo. She made 15 designs and showed Christian and Dr. Green, coming to a decision together after much thought and deliberation.

Jill Christian, junior public relations major, created the new color scheme and t-shirt design.

“I had a Canva whiteboard and went through at least a dozen different color schemes, just choosing what would be best for the rebrand.” Christian said, “Something new and different, but also something we all liked.”

The other officers gave feedback and voiced their opinions on the color schemes, aiding the process. Chrisitan ended up choosing navy and yellow for the new color scheme.

Dr. Green pitched the idea of having the ambassador program. In this new program, the people would be a member of SEPA and show up to their events, but would also become advocates for SEPA and shadow the officers. This would allow them to have a bigger part in SEPA since officer positions are limited, step into officer roles later on, and even be applicable to add to a resume.

The application process would be selective. One would need to sign up, and SEPA officers would review your information to make sure you qualify for the role.

The officers announced these changes at 7 pm on September 23rd at Granny’s Shaved Ice. After letting people mingle, they revealed the rebrand and the signup sheets for the new ambassador program.

“Our hope is that we will branch out to not only guys, but also a larger variety of majors,” Christian said. “Between the rebrand an
